Volunteers Make A Difference

It's easy to make a buck.

It's a lot tougher to make a difference.

3.13.20 Update

All healthy people who want to volunteer, please email Pastor Robin Caldwell at pastorrobincaldwell@gmail.com or our Food Pantry Leadership Team at stjohnfood@gmail.com.  A large portion of our volunteer base are senior citizens who we expect to stay home and remain healthy.  We need a handful healthy people who can help out and will fast track you to start helping as soon as possible.

Your safety and health are important to us.  Know that we have revised our distribution procedures to include the following:

  • CDC COVID-19 recommendations in place

  • No client/volunteer interaction

  • Elimination of potential cross contamination processes

  • Plenty of ventilation and space

Volunteer Opportunities

Mobile Food Pantry (MFP) Volunteer

5 Saturdays a year

Volunteer Opportunities from 7am - 1pm

Mobile Food Pantry (MFP) Events are one day events where volunteers serve 25,000+ lbs. of food to 250 people in 3 hours.  Events are held no matter the weather either in the parking lot outside, or in the Karin Johnson Fellowship Hall inside.  Volunteers can choose from a host of positions including client registration, hospitality, parking lot attendant, truck worker, bagging, set up, clean up, and more!

Pantry Day Volunteer

Tuesdays 12:00 - 3:00pm

Thursdays and Saturdays 8:30-11:30am

Pantry day volunteers run the food pantry.  They work in one of two areas.  The first area is the registration table where each client signs in.

The second area is the shopping space. Prior to opening, volunteers set up the shopping area which includes pulling out rolling shelves, stocking shelves, breaking down cardboard, bringing out food from walk in units and shelves.  During pantry shopping time, they assist clients, keep shelves stocked, and help in whatever needs to be done.  After pantry is over, volunteers stock shelves, wipe down tables and carts, put away rolling shelves, sweep, and make sure the shared space is clean.

Jewel & Fresh Thyme Pick Up Volunteer

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays

9 - 10:30am

Jewel & Fresh Thyme volunteers use their personal vehicle to pick up donated, FREE food from the Jewel-Osco at Caton Farm Road and Route 59 in Plainfield and from Fresh Thyme across the street from St. John. Volunteers work in teams and transport donated groceries from Jewel (4 miles to St. John) and Fresh Thyme (across the street) to St. John where they unload and store the foods.

Delivery Day Volunteer

Every Wednesday

8 - 11am

Every Wednesday, we receive between 5,000 - 12,000 lbs. of food from Northern IL Food Bank.  Teams of volunteers unload cases of food and either shelf or store them in designated spots.  Carts, hand carts, recycling bin on wheels, and a pallet jack are available to use.  Volunteers also bring broken down cardboard boxes to the parking lot for recycling.
